This seventeenth-century Jacobean coffer stands as an example of English Country House furniture from South Gloucestershire, constructed from dark brown oak with a rich patina and finished with iron hardware. The dark timber displays extensive hand carving, including foliate lunettes along the frieze, geometric and botanical motifs across the front panels, and linear vertical patterns on the long stile legs and stiles. A rectangular iron lockplate sits centrally on the upper rail beneath a flat hinged lid with bevelled edges and wooden dowels. Measuring 62 cm high, 117 cm wide and 39 cm deep, this lidded chest serves practically as a storage trunk in a hallway, bedroom or living area. Buyers can place blankets, linens or keepsakes inside while using the flat top surface to display lamps, books or decorative items.

A 17th-century oak coffer is a wooden storage chest constructed with joined framing and panels, typically featuring hand-carved decoration on the front face and a hinged lid.

Period coffers were primarily constructed from solid native timber such as English oak, joined using wooden pegs and mortise-and-tenon joints, often fitted with hand-forged iron lockplates and hinges.

Authentic pieces exhibit signs of hand-planing, irregular wooden peg joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, original ironwork with natural oxidisation, and timber shrinkage consistent with age.

An antique coffer functions effectively as a focal piece in an entryway, placed at the foot of a bed for linen storage, or positioned in a living area as an accent table while providing hidden storage.

Maintain the wood finish by dusting with a soft, dry cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the item away from direct heat sources and excessive moisture.
