Very Fine and Rare William & Mary, Ebony Striking Bracket Clock C.1690 by Isaac Lounds.

17th century
Description

Very fine and rare William & Mary, Ebony Basket Top bracket clock c.1690.

Original ( not re converted ) 8 day verge ,striking & pull quarter repeating, on six bells, striking the hour on the seventh bell.

This clock repeats all 4 quarters & the last strike.

The basket top with original finely cast handle of typical form and the corners fitted with original brass spires.

The door opening to reveal a 7" dial cornered with simple winged cherub heads, silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals & finely engraved half hour markers.

The dial centre finely matted and with false pendulum aperture, shaped and engraved and framing a moving Tudor Rose on a blued steel background. This unusual use of a blued steel background for the false pendulum aperture is seen on another Lounds clock ( Johnathon).

Strike no strike at 12 o'clock and a further aperture engraved at six o'clock for the date.

Very fine blued steel hands.

The dial and movement secured to the frame with typical turn discs.

The back plate being beautifully engraved with flowers, scrolls, mythical creatures & a seated bird.

The short bob pendulum terminating behind an exceptional pierced & engraved back cock apron. A cartouche signed ISAAC LOUNDS, LONDON.

The movement having five knopped and finned pillars with the centre pillar latched and having seven bells at the top.

It's very rare to find a clock of this age that hasn't been converted from verge to anchor or craftily re-converted back to verge again plugging holes in the process. This one hasn't been touched and is entirely original.
