Welsh Oak Press Cupboard, Circa 1770

Description

Nicely proportioned two-part Welsh oak food cupboard, the upper section with a bold cornice above a pair of panelled doors enclosing a shelved interior and flanked by reeded canted corners, over a base of four drawers raised on bracket feet.

The top panels are of a particularly unusual and elaborate design. The interior retains much of its historical limewash finish. Good colour and surface patination with signs of wear, especially around the sides and base.

A Welsh press cupboard, historically known in regional terminology as a cwtch press, is a two-stage storage cabinet originating in 18th-century Wales, combining a double-door top section over a base of drawers.

These cupboards were constructed from solid regional oak using pegged mortise and tenon joinery, raised fielded panel doors with hand-cut ogee arches, hand-dovetailed drawer boxes, and hand-forged iron fittings.

Authentic period examples demonstrate hand-planed timber marks, natural wood shrinkage along panel joins, original pegged frame construction, hand-cast brass swan-neck handles, and heavy oak backboards.
