Antique Dial Clock (Circa 1860) - J Rayno(e)r of Sandwich, Kent.

19th century
Sold by Culvertons
Description

A particularly nice example of a mahogany cased, mid 19th century, 8 day dial clock: sensitively restored and in full working order.

The beautifully turned pillars within the original handmade fusee movement were in fashion in the 1860's: which corresponds with the makers dates of 1839-1861.

The mahogany surround, due to its age and careful previous ownership, is now a desirable and attractive warm honey colour. The cast brass bezel and convex glass both are both indicators of quality.

It is very common for inaccuracies to appear in the spelling of makers names on dials: 'J Raynor' is inscribed on the dial where as 'J Rayner' would have been the correct spelling according to 'Watchmakers & Clockmakers of the World' by Brian Loomes.

The many inscriptions to the reverse of the dial reveal its horological past: J Woodruff of nearby Margate was a clockmaker and can be seen by the inscription to have serviced this clock on a number of occasions. Culvertons clock restorer has recently serviced this intersting clock.

Measurements -

Dial - 12 inches diameter

Dial & surround - 15 inches diameter

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
