Superb Victorian Mantel Clock, Achille Brocot Paris

19th century
Description

This is a fine quality 8 day mantel clock by the most famous and celebrated French clockmaker and inventor Achille Brocot (1817-1878). The stunning case is gold plated on solid brass and has a beautiful porcelain dial and inset panel finely hand enamelled in delightful colours with birds butterflies and cherry blossom. The case is stamped to the base with factory numbers that correspond to the painted numbers on the reverse of the porcelain panel. The movement is stamped with the Brocot mark and its identifying numbers which also correspond to the pendulum showing it to be the original. The movement has been fully overhauled and keeps excellent time, running for eight days and striking a lovely tone on a bell on the hour and half hour. The Paris retailer is marked to the dial and the clock has adjustable feet for levelling purposes.

Achille Brocot was a French clockmaker, mathematician and inventor. Brocot patented several improvements in clock design and invented the "Brocot Suspension", which enabled time keeping to be regulated by altering the length of the pendulum suspension spring by a key turned in the dial. He is also known for his co-discovery of the Stern-Brocot Tree, a mathematical structure useful in approximating real numbers by rational numbers, an important part of the design of gear ratios for clocks.

The clock measures 14 inches in height and 7 inches in width and 5 inches in depth.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.
