Antique 8 Day Long Case Clock By Richard Watkin (brecon) Circa 1760

Sold by: Hedley Wilson

An oak cased, brass-dial longcase clock with an 8 day duration striking hours on a bell.

Richard Watkin or Watkins was a well-known Welsh clockmaker who variously signed his clocks at Merthyr-Tydfil, Trecastle or Brecon, from which he worked and where he died in 1782. This clock has no place-name on the dial (often the case with this maker).

Watkin''s movements were idiosyncratic and thus are often recognisable as his work. For example he often made clocks with iron pillars and dial feet instead of the more usual (and expensive) brass.

The oak case is of country style and consistent with the period and area, it measures 84'' (2134mm)in maximum height.
