Victorian biscuit boxes, or biscuit barrels, emerged in the mid-to-late nineteenth century alongside the mass production of commercial biscuits in Britain. Designed as table hollowware, they were created to keep biscuits dry and crisp during afternoon tea services while showcasing the owners social status.

These vessels were predominantly constructed from Electroplated Nickel Silver (EPNS) or Britannia metal plated with silver. The process involved electro-depositing fine silver onto a durable base metal alloy, allowing for detailed engraving, embossing, and piercing at a lower cost than solid sterling silver.

Authentic pieces from the Victorian era typically feature stamped makers marks or EPNS trade marks on the underside or rim. Key construction details include cast metal feet, fitted lids with turned finials, hand-engraved or machine-turned surface decoration, and light wear showing copper or nickel base metal where silver plating has thinned.

An antique silver biscuit box serves as a functional decorative object on a dining room sideboard, kitchen island, or bar cart. It can function as intended for wrapped treats or be repurposed to store small household trinkets and stationery items.

Clean silver plate gently using a soft cloth and a specialised silver polish to remove surface tarnish without wearing away the silver layer. Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemical dips, and dishwashers, and store the item in a dry environment to minimise oxidisation.
