Set of Four Early 20th Century Louis-antoine Damon (1860-1947) Enamelled and Gilded Finger Bowls

1900 - 1920
Description

This is a set of four early 20th century French gilded and enamelled glass finger bowls by Louis-Antoine Damon (1860-1947). Louis-Antoine was a prominent French glass decorator, designer, and boutique owner operating out of the Boulevard Malesherbes in Paris. He used blanks produced by Daum, Nancy and other glassmakers before decorating them with natural motifs and selling them on. He eventually worked with his brother-in-law, operating as Damon & Delente. His works are highly regarded in France and internationally.

The bowls are in excellent condition for their age. They show age related wear and tear to the rims of the bases consistent with some use.

The bowls are cup shaped, measuring 11.4 cm (4.5 inches) in diameter at the upper rims. The bowls have been mould-blown in clear glass with panel moulding and then hand-decorated with enamelled pink roses and green leaves. The upper rims have also been gilded. The bowls end in plain bases which measure 5.8 cm (2.3 inches) in diameter and which display the legend "Damon, 20 Bd Malesherbes Paris" in lower case gilt script. The bowls are 6 cm (2.4 inches) in height. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious signs of restoration. Dimensions and weight varies marginally from bowl to bowl as should be expected of hand-made glass. They do NOT come in their original box.

Each bowl weighs in at 155 g. ( ~ 5 1/2 oz.). They are matched with a larger bowl which we also have for sale.

Date of Manufacture

The World is Made of Glass Ltd. has dated these Gilded Enamelled Glass Bowls to the 1920s.

Finger bowls were introduced to formal dining services to allow guests to rinse their fingertips between dining courses. Popularised throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, these vessels were crafted from glass, crystal, or metal and presented with a small cloth on a dedicated dessert plate.

Early twentieth-century French decorated glassware typically used soda-lime glass or lead crystal formed by blowing or moulding. Artisans applied vitreous enamel pastes containing ground glass pigments and metallic oxides onto the surface, firing the vessel at high temperatures to fuse the design before adding gold leaf gilding.

Authentic period pieces display slight irregularities in the hand-painted enamel enamel lines, raised tactile textures where enamel was applied, and age-consistent wear to gilding on handles or rims. Maker signatures or workshop marks are often etched or painted onto the underside base.

These decorative glass pieces can be displayed on a dining room sideboard, arranged on a brass tray, or used as trinket dishes on a dressing table. Grouping clear glass vessels together allows ambient light to highlight the colourful enamelled detail.

Wash enamelled glass gently by hand using lukewarm water and mild dish detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Never place hand-painted or gilded glass in a dishwasher, and dry immediately with a soft lint-free cloth to prevent water spots.
