Ebonised & Marquetry 2 Door Glazed Cabinet with “Caddy” Top

19th century
Description

Very good quality and decorative later 19th century English ebonised 2 door glazed cabinet with fabulous marquetry and a “caddy” top. Circa 1880 and in good condition, newly lined baize interior which gives it a lovely clean and fresh finish, also lightens it a lot too. You will see from the photos of the top, there are some of the usual age and wear marks, none of which are of any concern, very typical of these ebonised pieces.

Originally used as a display cabinet, but this works well as a drinks and glasses cabinet or bookcase with the three shelves giving good storage space. Interior Depth: 9.5" or 24cm.

The ebonised / black finish is beautifully contrasted with the box wood string inlay and walnut marquetry, along with the brass mounts. Original glass doors with a working lock and key.

Great piece of English antique furniture with a multitude of uses!

This later 19th-century English display cabinet follows the Napoleon III style and measures 109 cm high, 114 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. The piece is constructed from ebonised wood with a black finish, complemented by a boxwood string inlay, walnut marquetry, and a moulded caddy top. Notable details include ormolu brass corner mounts, glass-panelled doors with an upright brass keyhole escutcheon, and light-coloured baize lining the interior shelves. The top surface displays typical age-related wear marks from use over time. Suitable for use in a gentleman's library or study, this cabinet serves effectively as a bookcase, drinks cabinet, or display unit. The interior comprises three fitted shelves offering practical storage space for books, glassware, or decorative objects, supported by a sturdy plinth base. The combination of dark ebonisation and metallic highlights makes it a functional and traditional addition to a period interior.

Originating in mid-nineteenth-century France, Napoleon III style furniture is characterised by dark ebonised wood finishes, rich brass or ormolu mounts, and delicate marquetry inlays inspired by earlier Louis XVI designs.

These cabinets were typically constructed from solid hardwoods treated with dark stains or lacquers to mimic ebony, adorned with cast brass or bronze mounts, inlaid wood marquetry, and glass panel doors.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut marquetry work, heavy cast brass mounts secured with historic thread screws, natural surface wear to the ebonised finish, and original mouth-blown glass panes.

Position the dark cabinet against light neutral walls to highlight its silhouette, and balance the traditional brass detail by displaying modern ceramics or minimalist glassware on the interior shelves.

Dust the ebonised wood surfaces regularly with a soft dry cloth and avoid harsh chemical cleaners. Wipe brass mounts gently to prevent tarnish without removing aged patina.
