Historical Context
The early 19th century represented one of the great periods of British and Irish cut glass. Regency glasshouses produced exceptionally substantial lead-glass blanks, allowing cutters to work deeply into the glass and create the bold pillars, flutes and prismatic cutting characteristic of the period. The resulting pieces were considerably heavier than many later 19th-century claret jugs, with the deep cutting designed to exploit the brilliance of lead glass in candlelight. This example is a particularly fine example of that work with a superb original stopper.
