This Arts and Crafts style glass vase comes from England, dating from around 1890. It is made from translucent green glass with a polished finish and a bulbous body that rises to a flared neck. Raised helical ridges create a distinct wrythen pattern that spirals up the entire height of the vessel from the circular base to the rim. Reflections glint off the smooth curved surfaces under direct light, highlighting the depth of the green colour. The glass shows no signs of wear, chips, or repair in the photograph. Measuring 30 cm in height, the piece fits neatly on a sideboard top, a mantelpiece, or a dining table. It suits a sunlit conservatory or a living room styled with period furnishings, where it can hold fresh stems or stand alone as a decorative accent.

Arts and Crafts glassware from the late 19th century focuses on simple forms, organic motifs, and handcrafted production techniques. Artisans favoured natural glass colours and manipulative shaping methods like ribbing or twisting rather than heavy cut ornamentation.

Wrythen glass was produced by blowing molten glass into a ribbed mould and then hand-twisting the piece while hot to create spiral lines. This technique highlighted the optical refraction and fluid qualities of translucent glass.

Authentic vessels typically display hand-finished characteristics such as polished pontil marks on the base and slight variations in glass thickness. The presence of subtle air bubbles or minor inclusions within the glass matrix also indicates traditional hand-blown production.

Positioning glass near a natural light source, such as a window sill, accentuates its translucent green tone and optical patterns. It functions effectively as a standalone decorative object or displayed alongside neutral ceramics on a sideboard or console.

Wash the item gently using lukewarm water and a mild non-abrasive liquid detergent, avoiding hot water which can cause thermal stress. Dry thoroughly with a soft microfibre cloth to prevent water spots and avoid harsh chemical cleaners.
