This Victorian pine bedside cabinet, or pot cupboard, is constructed from natural pine displaying a warm honey colour with a well-aged patina and figured grain. The piece features a single door with an arched moulded panel, a turned wooden knob handle, side top galleries with shaped ends, and a solid moulded plinth base, showing honest signs of age alongside its traditional country construction. Measuring 79.5 cm high, 39.5 cm wide, and 36.5 cm deep, it provides compact proportions suitable for storing items out of sight. In a modern home, this storage unit functions practically beside a bed or in a bathroom for holding everyday essentials, or alternatively in a country kitchen as a small cupboard. The traditional rustic farmhouse aesthetic integrates easily into bedroom or hallway settings where surface space and enclosed storage are both required.

FAQs

During the nineteenth century, pot cupboards were designed primarily for bedroom use to discreetly store chamber pots before indoor plumbing became standard. They typically featured a single enclosed door and a flat top surface for a wash basin or candle.

Victorian pot cupboards were predominantly crafted from solid softwoods such as Scots pine or pitch pine for country residences, as well as hardwoods like mahogany, walnut, or oak for formal urban homes.

Authentic nineteenth-century pine cupboards generally exhibit hand-cut dovetail or mortise-and-tenon joinery, original hand-turned wooden knobs, square-cut interior backboards, and natural wood shrinkage along grain lines.

These compact freestanding units function effectively as modern bedside tables, side tables adjacent to seating, or accent storage solutions within hallways and bathrooms.

Regular application of clear beeswax preserves the timber surface and prevents drying. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and clean surfaces using a soft dry microfibre cloth without harsh chemical solvents.
