Originally designed in the 18th and 19th centuries, pot cupboards served as discreet bedroom storage units specifically constructed to house a chamber pot before modern indoor plumbing was introduced.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut, often incorporating hand-cut joinery, solid timber backing, and turned wooden or brass hardware.

Authentic examples typically feature solid wood construction, hand-planed surfaces, panelled doors, raised gallery rims to prevent items sliding off, and signs of natural timber shrinkage.

While originally functional bedroom furniture, these compact cabinets function effectively as side tables beside low sofas, accent pieces in narrow hallways, or storage units in home offices.

Dust regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a quality beeswax polish occasionally, keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources and strong sunlight to protect the wood finish.
