Description

An 18th-Century Carved Oak Louis XVI Buffet Deux Corps Cupboard

A good example of Norman craftsmanship, this impressive French buffet deux corps was crafted in solid oak circa 1790 and perfectly captures the elegant provincial interpretation of the Louis XVI style.

The upper section is crowned with a beautifully shaped bonnet, finely carved with scrolling motifs and a richly detailed central crest featuring floral bouquets in a woven basket. Two shaped panelled doors with shaped mouldings and intricate carvings, open to reveal an interior with two shelves, ideal for displaying faience, porcelain, glassware, or treasured collections. Delicate carved floral garlands and foliate motifs embellish the façade throughout, with every edge carved top and bottom, while brass escutcheons and hardware, together with locks and working keys, add authenticity and charm.

The lower cabinet features two panelled doors framed by deeply moulded surrounds and accented with finely carved floral decoration, enclosing a generously sized storage compartment. A shaped apron adds further individuality and grace. The cabinet stands on elegant escargot cabriole feet and retains wonderfully balanced proportions that offer both visual lightness and practical functionality. The sides are attractively panelled, and both upper and lower sections retain their original oak backboards.

Throughout, the oak displays beautiful grain patterns and a warm honey coloured patina developed over centuries of use. Rich hand carved detailing, original character marks, and gentle wear consistent with age all contribute to the authenticity and appeal of this important Normandy buffet deux corps.

A striking and highly decorative statement piece, ideal for a refined dining room, kitchen, library, or country house interior.

This 18th century Louis XVI French Provincial buffet deux corps is constructed from solid oak in a warm honey brown colour with a rich patina. The imposing two-part cupboard stands 235 cm high, 136 cm wide, and 48 cm deep, resting on short scrolled escargot cabriole feet. The upper section features a shaped bonnet surmounted by a central carved floral basket, above two arched panel doors adorned with carved floral garlands, foliate motifs, and brass escutcheons. The lower cabinet contains two panelled doors with deep mouldings and a carved floral medallion on the shaped apron. Original character marks and gentle wear appear across the textured wood grain, while the side panels and backboards maintain the structural integrity of the piece. The upper cabinet interior holds two shelves behind the panel doors for display purposes, and the lower compartment provides enclosed storage space. This imposing storage cabinet suits placement in a dining room, kitchen, library, or country house interior for organizing tableware, glassware, books, or decorative objects.

A buffet deux corps is a traditional French two-part cabinet featuring a lower cupboard base topped with a upper cabinet section. Originating in the 18th century, Louis XVI regional examples are characterised by classical symmetry, straight lines, and decorative wood carvings depicting flora, ribbons, or urns.

Regional craftsmen primarily utilised solid hardwoods native to their areas, such as oak, walnut, and fruitwood. Construction relied on pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-planed back panels, and hand-forged iron or cast brass hardware including elongated barrel hinges and keyhole escutcheons.

Authentic Normandy cabinets display distinct regional characteristics, such as rich carved motifs including floral baskets, wheatears, or garlands. Look for signs of hand-tooled construction, irregular pegs, historical timber shrinkage around door panels, and original wrought iron or brass fittings.

A large two-tier oak cabinet serves as a focal point in a dining room, kitchen, or entrance hall. Contrast its rich timber tones against neutral walls, pairing it with contemporary seating or minimal accessories to ground the room without visual clutter.

Keep oak furniture away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent timber movement and cracking. Clean surfaces with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish sparingly once or twice a year to preserve the wood finish.
