Art Deco Tall Uranium Glass and Etched Vase by Karl Palda, Czech Republic, C1930

1920 - 1940
For Sale by Art Deco World
Description

An exceptional 1930's Art Deco uranium glass vase originating from the Czech Republic. Heavily decorated and most glorious geometric decoration. High quality with the most beautiful detailing and no damage. The body of the vase is an unusual shape with multi colourway enamelling with stunning acid etched detailing. Decorated both sides, displays beautifully and will certainly make an impact in any Deco setting. Pure class. The whole vase is very heavy and the glass itself quite thick showing real signs of quality. This is one of three vases sourced from a private collector and fresh and first to market.

The most common color of uranium glass is pale yellowish-green, which in the 1930s led to the nickname "Vaseline glass" based on a perceived resemblance to the appearance (which was a yellow-green colour) of Vaseline brand petroleum jelly as formulated and commercially sold at that time. This vase definitely won't disappoint, we defy the new owner not to fall in love it. Condition is excellent, can't find any damage or flaws to note.

This Art Deco vase originates from the Czech Republic during the 1930s, produced in the style characteristic of Karl Palda. The piece consists of thick, heavy pale yellowish-green uranium glass shaped in a tapered rectangular form with an open top. The exterior surface displays dense multi-colourway enamelling incorporating geometric red and black enamel patterns, alongside acid-etched panels showing intricate abstract details. The decoration is applied across the sides of the glass body, combining colourful enamel highlights with transparent green material. The vase stands 23 cm high, 9 cm wide, and 9 cm deep. In a contemporary home, this decorative glass object suits placement on a sideboard top or display cabinet surface within an interior setting that incorporates twentieth-century design elements. The bright yellow-green body colour and bold geometric motifs catch natural or interior lighting, making it suitable for standalone display. The thick construction provides stability for placement on flat surfaces without requiring additional support.

Karl Palda designs from the 1930s are noted for their geometric forms, stark angular lines, and contrasting surface treatments. They frequently combine acid-etching, hand-painted black and red enamel, and cut glass techniques on distinctive geometric vessels.

Uranium glass was created by adding small percentages of uranium oxide to the glass melt before shaping. This formulation provided a yellow-green colouration and gave the glass its characteristic fluorescent response when exposed to ultraviolet light.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit precise geometric wheel-cut or acid-etched patterns alongside crisp enamel hand-application. Additionally, testing under a 365nm blacklight will confirm the presence of uranium oxide through a vivid green glow.

Positioning glass vessels near natural light sources highlights the translucent green tone and enamel detailing. The clean architectural shapes complement modern minimalist decor, dark wood sideboards, or contemporary glass display cabinets.

Dust gently with a soft microfibre cloth and clean using lukewarm water with mild soap when necessary. Avoid abrasive sponges, harsh chemical cleaners, or dishwashers to prevent degradation of the delicate surface enamel and etched areas.
