Description

A great looking English oak Art Deco inspired two door glazed bookcase c1930s in lovely condition with a working lock and key.

Large enough to be useful and small enough to fit into most spaces. The bookcase/cabinet sits with 2 large oak bulbous attractively shaped feet to the front with an appealing pattern to the framed doors and a tapered back upstand - all very much in the Art Deco style without being too pushy. Inside we have 3 adjustable shelves.

The cabinet sits in fine order with pleasing tones and grains to the oak. We have the original glass and as mentioned a working lock for the door. We have a small ink mark to the top, not new. We have carefully cleaned the piece and ensured it is ready for placing.

A good looking and useful piece of 1930s oak furniture.

Billy Hunt and Co is located on a large Victorian farm just a short country drive from the Rangemore village, a designated conservation area, which was built by Michael Thomas Bass in the 1850s to house the Bass Rangemore Estate workers consisting mainly of Victorian redbrick cottages and the occasional barn.

Our home is a classic Victorian designed and well equipped late 19th century 2 story red brick built barn of some 4000 sq feet nestled in classic English countryside, which enjoyed a careful full renovation in 2000. The estate still benefits being managed in the traditional manner with an Estate Manger, estate carpenter, gardeners etc. A rather delightful place to have as our work space.

Martina, there is no Billy at Billy hunt, has led the team since 2103 and is an interior designer qualified from The Inchbald School of Design London whose previous working life included such clients as Vertu, Aston Martin and Johnnie Walker to name a few.

Please do not hesitate to call or email if you have any questions on the pieces that may interest you - Many thanks Martina

This English oak Art Deco bookcase and display cabinet dates from around 1930 and exhibits a warm brown colour with visible grain patterns across the timber. The piece has twin glazed doors framed by geometric wooden astragal bars, a carved frieze along the top moulding, a tapered back upstand, and squat turned bulbous feet at the front. Original glass is present within the doors alongside a working lock, while the interior provides three adjustable shelves. Dimensions overall are 120.5 cm in height, 126.5 cm to the upstand, 89 cm in width, and 31.5 cm in depth. Suitable for use in a living room, study, or hallway, this cabinet offers practical storage while maintaining a streamlined geometric silhouette characteristic of the period. The proportion allows the furniture to fit into most domestic spaces without dominating a room, providing visible display space behind glass doors for books or decorative items. The construction reflects standard utility furniture standards of the 1930s while retaining clean lines and traditional joinery methods.

FAQs

Art Deco furniture from the 1930s is defined by geometric shapes, clean lines, and stylised decorative elements, moving away from heavy Victorian ornamentation while maintaining fine woodwork craftsmanship.

These bookcases were predominantly constructed from solid oak or oak veneers, featuring glass door panes supported by timber glazing bars (astragals) and period brass or metal hardware.

Authentic pieces display period-specific joinery, original glass panes, distinct geometric wood tracery across the doors, and squat turned or bulbous feet typical of 1930s British furniture production.

Position the cabinet as a focal point in a living area, home office, or hallway, using the interior shelves to display curated ceramics, glassware, or hardback books against neutral backdrop tones.

Dust regularly with a dry microfibre cloth, apply a natural beeswax polish along the timber grain annually to protect the oak, and clean glass surfaces with a non-ammonia cleaner applied directly to a cloth.
