Description

A rare 'taille Canadienne' Val ST Lambert four colour bowl Belgium c.1925 Designed and made by Joseph Simon the pre WW2 head of design for Val St Lambert The glass is made in three layers, clear, yellow and amethyst, there is also a rim of red glass which is unusual. The glass is then cut from both sides a skill I believe now lost as the success rate would be very low.

This rare Art Deco four-colour lead crystal bowl originates from Belgium in the 1920s, designed and made by Joseph Simon. The piece is constructed in three layers of glass comprising clear, yellow, and amethyst, complemented by an unusual red glass outer rim. Intricate decoration includes taille Canadienne cuts, cased glass, geometric facets, and a scalloped rim, alongside a pattern of small white clover-like motifs encircling the mid-section and yellow scalloped edging near the outer border. The centre features a deep, scalloped well with radiating fluted detailing in dark tones and a bright yellow circular base. Measuring 875 cm high and 24 cm wide, the bowl sits well upon a dining table center as an eye-catching ornamental piece. The intricate double-sided cutting technique produces a rich interplay of colours and textures visible from above, making it a striking example of early twentieth-century Belgian glassmaking.

Val Saint Lambert is a Belgian glassworks established in 1826, famed for producing high-grade lead crystal. During the Art Deco period of the 1920s, the manufactory created multi-coloured cased crystal bowls and vases, utilizing complex geometric wheel cutting.

Cased glass was created by fusing multiple thin layers of coloured molten glass over a clear or contrasting coloured lead crystal core. Glass cutters then used abrasive wheels to carve through these outer layers, exposing the contrasting hues beneath.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-cut geometry, substantial weight due to high lead content, and clarity of light refraction. Many items carry acid-etched marks on the base along with recognized production patterns like taille Canadienne.

Position the bowl where direct or ambient light can pass through it, such as on a dining table or console. Placing colourful crystal against neutral contemporary backdrops allows the saturated glass layers to create vivid light patterns.

Wash crystal by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding dishwashers which cause permanent surface clouding. Dry immediately with a lint-free cloth to eliminate water spots and maintain the sharp refraction of cut facets.
