This matching pair of 1930s English country style bedside cabinets is made from solid oak in a warm brown timber colour. Each cabinet stands on a plinth base and includes a single drawer with a round brass pull, a raised panel door fitted with a brass drop handle and keyhole escutcheon, and an upright back rail decorated with carved foliage. The upper surface sits at a height of 64 cm, with overall dimensions of 77 cm high, 39 cm wide, and 43 cm deep. These practical storage units work well beside a bed in a bedroom setting, holding books, lamps, and personal items while adding a traditional touch to modern interiors. FAQs

Bedside cabinets, historically referred to as pot cupboards, became common domestic furnishings during the 18th and 19th centuries to store chamber pots and night-time belongings. By the late Victorian and Edwardian eras, these pieces evolved into general storage nightstands incorporating drawers, cupboards, and decorative backboards.

Traditional oak bedside cabinets were built using solid frame-and-panel joinery, dovetail drawer construction, hand-carved top galleries, and fitted brass hardware. Secondary timbers such as pine or ash were frequently used for internal drawer lining and cabinet back panels.

Authentic period examples exhibit natural timber shrinkage, hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, original locks or handles, and age-appropriate surface patination. True matching pairs from the turn of the century are less common, as many were originally produced as single standalone units.

Positioning a matching pair of oak nightstands alongside modern upholstered beds creates textural contrast. Pairing natural oak grain with neutral wall palettes, crisp cotton bedding, and contemporary brass lighting helps integrate traditional furniture into contemporary spaces.

Maintain oak surfaces by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year. Keep timber away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent warping, cracking, or uneven fading of the finish.
