Antique Victorian Elm & Beech Country Stool C.1890

19th century
Description

A late 19th century country stool, the rounded single-piece well-figured elm seat raised on four splayed turned beech legs with attractive waisted necks and well-worn turned button feet, united by a staggered double-tier turned stretcher frame.

Exemplifying traditional English vernacular craft, its broad splayed stance and compact footprint make it ideal as a hearthside seat, hall perch or even a small low side table beside an armchair.

Very good antique condition, retaining a characterful patination and authentic surface wear consistent with age. Structurally tight and sound throughout, clean and ready to place in the home.

English, circa 1890.

This late 19th-century Victorian country stool is a vernacular piece in the rustic farmhouse style, fashioned from a dark brown elm seat and turned beech legs with waisted necks, turned button feet, and staggered double-tier spindle stretchers. The rounded single-piece elm seat rests on four splayed legs joined by stretchers, presenting a characterful patination with authentic surface wear consistent with age, alongside wedge joinery. The stool measures 48 cm high, 38 cm wide, and 34 cm deep. In a modern home, this compact piece serves as a hearthside seat, a hall perch, or a small low side table positioned next to an armchair. It integrates well into traditional and rustic living spaces where practical seating is required.

FAQs

Victorian country stools are utilitarian seating pieces crafted in regional workshop settings across Britain during the late 19th century. Typically unpretentious in form, these pieces served practical daily functions in farmhouses, kitchens, and dairies.

Traditional country stools frequently combine distinct hardwoods, utilizing dense elm for thick, durable seats that resist splitting, and turned beech or ash for sturdy legs and stretchers connected via mortise and tenon joinery.

Authentic 19th-century examples display hand-turned legs, asymmetrical wear patterns around the feet and stretchers, and wedge-tenon construction visible on the top of the seat. The underside often retains tool marks, natural shrinkage, and undisturbed patination.

In contemporary settings, an antique stool operates effectively as a sculptural accent beside a sofa, a low pedestal for showcasing ceramics, or functional occasional seating within a hallway or bathroom alcove.

Preserve the wood by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying a neutral beeswax polish annually to nourish the grain. Keep the stool away from direct heat sources and high humidity to prevent timber movement or joint looseness.
