This French Belle Epoque carriage clock dates from around 1900. The piece is constructed from gilt brass with bevelled glass panels and a white enamel dial bearing black Roman numerals and spade hands, all finished in a warm gold tone. The plain Corniche case includes an oval top glass aperture, a hinged swivel carrying handle with faceted central decoration, and stepped mouldings around the base. The inner mechanics reveal a silvered platform lever escapement and a backplate stamped with a trademark and serial number. Measuring 18 cm high with the handle raised, this compact timepiece fits neatly on a mantelpiece or desk within a gentleman's library or study today.

Developed in France in the early nineteenth century, carriage clocks were portable timepieces designed for travellers, typically featuring rectangular gilt-brass cases, glass side panels, and top carrying handles.

Carriage clocks were constructed using solid brass cases with gold gilding, bevelled glass panels, enamel dials, and mechanical steel and brass movements.

Authentic carriage clocks feature thick bevelled glass plates, maker stamps or serial numbers on the rear movement movement plate, white enamel dials, and mechanical spring-driven balance wheels rather than modern quartz movements.

Place a gilt-brass carriage clock on a fireplace mantelpiece, a dark wood bookshelf, or a hallway console table to introduce a historical focal point alongside contemporary decor.

Keep the clock in a climate-controlled room away from moisture, clean glass panels using a dry microfibre cloth, and have the internal mechanical movement professionally cleaned and oiled every five years.
