This Victorian apothecary jar originates from circa 1890 in the style of the period. The translucent light green uranium glass body has a square shape and a ground glass neck, accompanied by a fitted faceted mushroom stopper on top. A white paper shield-shaped label with black text reading Bismutosa and gilt borders adheres to the front surface. The piece measures 13.5 cm high, 6 cm wide, and 4.5 cm deep. Placed within a deep window sill or inside a gentleman's library, the item adds historic interest to a domestic interior. The translucent green tone interacts with natural light to create a noticeable visual display on shelves or ledges. Collectors of pharmacy items or nineteenth-century glassware can integrate this piece into existing shelf arrangements alongside other small decorative vessels.

Uranium glass is glass that has had uranium oxide added to a glass mix before melting for colouring. Production peaked from the mid-nineteenth century through the 1940s, primarily used for tableware, decorative glassware, and pharmaceutical vessels.

Victorian apothecary bottles were typically press-moulded or mouth-blown, featuring ground-glass stoppers tailored to fit each bottle neck tightly. Labels were applied using paper, enamel, or reverse-painted glass inserts to identify chemical contents.

Authentic uranium glass displays a characteristic pale yellow or green colour under natural light and fluoresces bright green under ultraviolet (black) light due to the uranium content. Era-appropriate pieces also exhibit typical nineteenth-century manufacturing marks, such as ground pontils or hand-cut stoppers.

These vessels are suited for display on bookshelves, window sills, or inside glass cabinets alongside other vintage glassware. Positioning them where natural light passes through highlights the translucent colour and glass density.

Clean the glass exterior using a dry or slightly damp microfibre cloth, strictly avoiding contact with original paper labels to prevent tearing or adhesive degradation. Do not submerge labelled bottles in water or use harsh chemical solvents.
