This pair of porcelain vases originates from the French 1910 period in a Rococo Revival style. The bodies are finished in a crisp white glaze, accented with detailed hand-painted multi-coloured garden scenes featuring cherubs playing musical instruments amidst floral garlands, along with gilded rims trimmed in goldleaf at the top and base. Each vase has a baluster shape with a flared neck and a smooth rounded body. Measuring 34 cm high, 16 cm wide, and 16 cm deep, these vessels are suited for display on a mantelpiece in a living room, dining room, or hallway. They integrate well into both traditional and contemporary interiors, complementing a French Chateau design theme. The condition is excellent, showing pristine surfaces with no visible cracks or chips.

FAQs

Cherubs, or putti, became prominent in decorative arts during the Renaissance and experienced major revivals throughout the 18th and 19th centuries under Rococo and Victorian influences. These classical figures were widely used on fine porcelain vessels to symbolise innocence, music, and romantic pastoral themes.

Fine porcelain from this era was formed using kaolin clay and fired at extremely high temperatures to create a non-porous body. Artisans then applied transferred or hand-painted enamel illustrations before adding gilt highlights along the rims and bases prior to a final firing.

Authentic pieces generally feature hand-painted details or fine transfer lines visible under magnification, slight variations between paired items, and signs of natural age such as light wear to the gilded edges or gentle surface crazing.

Positioning the pair symmetrically on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or console table creates a refined focal point. Balancing their classical motif alongside clean-lined modern art or neutral wall surfaces creates an engaging visual contrast.

Dust regularly using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or horsehair brush. If cleaning is necessary, wipe gently with warm water and a mild detergent, avoiding harsh chemicals, abrasive pads, or prolonged immersion that could damage delicate gilding.
