Open salt cellars are small tabletop vessels used for holding granular salt prior to the widespread adoption of free-flowing salt shakers in the early twentieth century. During the Victorian period, silversmiths crafted these pieces in sterling silver, commonly pairing them with removable glass inserts and miniature serving spoons.

Blue glass liners were introduced to protect the sterling silver interior from corrosion caused by salt, which reacts chemically with silver to cause pitting and dark oxidisation. The cobalt blue glass also created a vivid aesthetic contrast against the white salt and the polished metal rim.

Authentic British sterling silver cellars feature official hallmarking stamps, which typically include the lion passant for silver purity, a makers mark, a town mark, a date letter, and often a sovereign duty mark. Details such as hand-chased legs and cast rims further indicate period craftsmanship.

While originally designed for formal dining tables, salt cellars can be repurposing as delicate ring dishes on a dressing table or arranged on a sideboard alongside other vintage silver objects. Their compact scale makes them ideal display items for glass-fronted cabinets.

The glass liners should be removed and washed separately in warm water using mild dish soap. The sterling silver frames and spoons should be cleaned using a soft cotton cloth alongside a dedicated silver polish, avoiding abrasive pads that could wear down fine hallmarking or raised casting.
