This Victorian pair of sterling silver place card holders dates from 1892 and originates from Scotland, carrying full hallmarks for Edinburgh. Each piece takes the form of an ornate pierced front panel depicting two detailed cherub figures set amidst scrolling foliate work and elaborate scrollwork. The metallic silver items stand upon straight horizontal bars at the base, supported by hinged easel backs on the reverse that allow the pieces to remain upright. The design incorporates small upright supports, delicate pierced cut-outs, and lightly polished reflective surfaces showing minor light surface wear consistent with age and gentle handling. Each individual holder measures 4 cm high, 7 cm wide, and 4 cm deep. In a contemporary home, these small sculptures sit upon a formal dining table center to hold guest name cards during dinner parties or celebratory gatherings, bringing an ornate Victorian aesthetic to table settings.

Place card holders became popular during the late Victorian era as formal dining etiquette required structured seating arrangements for multi-course dinner parties.

These items were predominantly manufactured from sterling silver, silver plate, or brass, often incorporating pierced scrollwork, repousse work, or cast figurative details.

Authentic British sterling silver pieces feature hallmark stamps indicating the purity mark, city assay office mark, date letter, and makers initials.

They can be used on formal dining tables for dinner parties, or repurposed on sideboards and desks to hold photograph displays, business cards, or small botanical prints.

Dust regularly and clean using a soft cotton cloth with specialist silver polish, avoiding harsh chemical dips that remove intentional oxidisation from detailed recesses.
