This pair of Victorian place card holders consists of cast sterling silver items with a bright silver finish. Each piece exhibits pierced scrollwork and foliar design, one decorated with a pheasant and the other with a crow among detailed botanical foliage. The design includes openwork filigree details, hammered textures on the foliage, and integrated card slots at the rear, resting upright on flat cast silver bases. The items measure 4 cm high, 5.7 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. These accessories serve effectively on a dining table centre as menu card holders, place card markers, or small photograph holders. The traditional aesthetic complements an English Country House interior setting. They function well for organising place settings during formal dinners or family meals, adding a decorative touch to a table arrangement.

Menu and place card holders became prominent during the late nineteenth century as formal dining customs evolved to include individual place settings and printed dinner menus. Craftsmen created miniature silver holders featuring intricate pierced, cast, or engraved motifs to display cards on elaborate dining tables.

Victorian menu card holders were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate. Artisans utilised techniques such as lost-wax casting, hand-piercing, and chasing to achieve detailed figurative, foliate, and animal designs attached to solid or ring-supported bases.

Authentic British silver items feature official assay office hallmarks, including a purity mark such as the lion passant for sterling silver, a date letter, a town mark, and a makers mark. Victorian pieces may also carry a duty mark depicting the sovereigns head.

These decorative silver items can be styled on formal dining tables for holding place names, menu cards, or seating instructions. Alternatively, they function as elegant desk accessories for holding business cards, photographs, or handwritten notes.

Maintain silver card holders by wiping them gently with a soft cotton cloth and using specialised, non-abrasive silver polish to clear tarnish from intricate pierced details. Store them in anti-tarnish cloth bags away from humidity and direct sunlight.
