FAQs

An oak press cupboard is a traditional wooden storage piece featuring upper enclosed cupboards, often decorated with carved panels or turned spindles, set above drawers or open shelving. Originating in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, these cabinets were historically utilised for storing household linens, tableware, or food.

Traditional cupboards are constructed from solid oak using mortise and tenon joinery, hand-carved decorative motifs, and panelled construction. Hardware typically includes hand-forged iron or cast brass butterfly hinges and drop handles.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed woodwork, pegged joints, irregular drawer dovetails, and historic wear surrounding handles and feet. The interior timber often shows tool marks or legacy painted finishes added to preserve the wood.

These substantial oak cupboards provide grounding character when positioned in hallways, dining areas, or modern kitchens as freestanding pantries. Contrast the dark timber by placing the unit against light neutral walls alongside contemporary ceramics or minimal decor.

Maintain oak furniture by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a clear beeswax polish once or twice per year. Keep the item away from direct heat sources and humid environments to prevent timber movement and cracking.
