This large Georgian sterling silver basting spoon dates from the period and bears clear hallmarks for London 1800 by maker William Sumner. The piece is fashioned from solid silver with a bright polished finish in a gleaming metallic silver tone. Design details include a long, slender elongated stem expanding into a flared terminal engraved with a crest, and a deep oval bowl at the opposite end. Good maker and date marks appear clearly punched near the terminal. The utensil measures 32 cm in length. Suitable for use on a dining table or sideboard top to serve large roasts, it also functions as an elegant display piece in a traditional home setting.

During the Georgian era, large silver basting spoons, frequently referenced as stuffing or ragout spoons, were designed for serving meats, juices, and side dishes at formal dining tables.

Georgian basting spoons were forged from sterling silver, consisting of 92.5 percent pure silver alloyed with copper to provide structural firmness.

Authentic Georgian pieces feature official British hallmarks stamped into the metal, including the makers mark, the lion passant for sterling purity, a town mark, a date letter, and the sovereign duty mark.

Antique silver spoons can be arranged inside a glass display cabinet, laid across a sideboard top, or integrated into modern dinner table settings.

Clean silver flatware with warm water and a mild detergent, drying thoroughly before polishing with a soft cloth and specialist silver foam to prevent tarnish build-up.
