Late Meiji Period Maruni Kobe Japanese Satsuma Floral Vases, C.1910

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

We are delighted to offer an exceptional pair of Japanese Satsuma earthenware vases, dating to the late Meiji period, circa 1910. Crafted by the renowned Maruni company in Kobe, these vases showcase a very high standard of artistic workmanship. What sets this pair apart is their substantial and very good size, giving them a remarkable decorative presence compared to typical smaller cabinet pieces.

The hand-painted decoration features a highly detailed autumn botanical theme. Maples, chrysanthemums, and delicate bellflowers are rendered in vibrant enamels, accompanied by small birds in flight. These exquisite overglaze enamels are significantly enhanced by raised moriage gilding, creating a wonderful tactile texture over the traditional finely crackled cream glaze.

Both bases carry the Shimazu clan crest and the Maruni signature, alongside a faded handwritten Dai Nippon mark. Finding a true pair of this dimension with such refined floral execution and in flawless condition is increasingly rare.

Dimensions

Height: 24.8 cm; Diameter: 12.4 cm; Weight: 837 g and 814 g

Condition

Both vases are in magnificent collector's condition. UV examination confirms that both vases are structurally perfect, with no cracks, hairlines, chips, or restorations. There is only very minor, natural rubbing to the gilt borders on the rims, entirely consistent with careful handling over a century.

Please study the accompanying photographs carefully as they form an integral part of this description. If you have any questions, we will be happy to answer them. The item will be shipped with full tracking and insurance. It is important to note that shipping costs include labour, packaging and postage.

Satsuma ware is a style of Japanese earthenware pottery that originated in Satsuma Province during the late 16th century, becoming globally recognised during the Meiji period for its intricate hand-painted enamels and gilding produced for export markets.

Satsuma ceramics are constructed from a light-coloured earthenware body finished with a finely crackled transparent glaze, embellished using polychrome enamel pigments and gilded detailing applied over the glaze surface.

Authentic Meiji era Satsuma ceramics typically feature a fine ivory-toned crackle glaze, hand-painted detailing using raised enamel pigments, delicate gilding, and frequently bear character marks or workshop signatures on the base.

Satsuma vases act as refined focal accents when arranged as a symmetrical pair on a fireplace mantelpiece, sideboard, or curated shelf, introducing historical texture and warmth to contemporary or traditional rooms.

Dust the earthenware surfaces gently using a clean, soft microfibre cloth, taking care to avoid water submersion or abrasive chemical detergents that can erode fragile overglaze gilding and enamels.
