Very Large Old Sheffield Plated Bottle Coaster / Table Stand C1800-1820

19th century
Description

A rare and highly unusual coaster or table stand of very large size. Made of Old Sheffield Plate and dating to circa 1800-1820, but bearing no makers mark. Beautiful arched edging with a convex base, standing on four stylised feet. We are unsure to the exact purpose of this piece, but it may have been a coaster for an oversized wine bottle. Its convex base mirrors the shape of the base of a wine bottle.

The condition is good with no dents or splits. There is slight wear to some of the upright spokes and a few scratches to the interior. One small patch of copper bleed to the top rim, revealing a visible seam.

Weight approx 1.3kg.

Total span approx 30cm

Height approx 19.5cm.

Diameter at rim approx 20.5cm.

Internal rim approx 20cm

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to an 18th and early 19th-century manufacturing technique where a layer of silver was thermally fused onto copper before being worked into dining holloware and accessories.

Craftsmen drew fused silver and copper into thin wire strands, hand-forming arches or vertical galleries that were soft-soldered to a solid base and finished with reeded borders.

Authentic pieces often reveal subtle red copper showing through areas of natural rubbing, feature die-struck seam lines, and lack the stamped electroplating marks introduced in the Victorian period.

Position the coaster on a dining table or sideboard as a functional vessel for decanters, modern wine bottles, or small botanical displays.

Wash with mild soapy water and dry thoroughly, applying specialised non-abrasive silver cream sparingly to avoid wearing through the thin silver layer.
