Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This Victorian gentleman's library tantalus from 1880 comprises a dark brown oak frame holding three cut crystal decanters with facet-cut stoppers and spiral patterns. The dark timber structure includes silver-toned engraved metal corner mounts, an ornate central lock escutcheon with a key in place, and a turned wooden carrying handle mounted on metal terminals at the top. The side panels have shaped edges and house the glass vessels securely within the base. The piece measures 32 cm high, 35 cm wide, and 13 cm deep. Positioned on a sideboard top, this decanter set suits a living room, study, or dining room. The three square decanters sit side by side within the fitted wooden enclosure, displaying detailed optical cutting across their bodies. The metal hardware shows age-appropriate patination, while the crystal stoppers retain their original faceted design. The compact footprint makes it practical for entertaining or display on a side table.

FAQs

A tantalus is a wooden frame cabinet or stand designed to hold spirit decanters, featuring a lock and key mechanism that prevents the decanters from being opened while keeping their contents visible.

Traditional Victorian tantalus sets were constructed from hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, combined with silver-plated or brass metal fittings and hand-cut lead crystal decanters.

Authentic Victorian examples typically feature heavy cut glass or crystal decanters, solid hardwood construction, original locking mechanisms with metal mounts, and natural age-related patination on the wood and metal fittings.

An antique tantalus functions as a functional decorative accent on a sideboard, bar cart, or drinks cabinet, bringing a classic historical touch to dining rooms or home bar areas.

Wash crystal decanters by hand using lukewarm water and mild soap, avoiding thermal shock, and polish the wooden frame using a natural beeswax polish while keeping metal mounts dry.
