Exceptional Queen Anne Burr Walnut Press Cupboard C. 1700

A particularly high quality Queen Anne Burr walnut and solid walnut linen press in excellent condition and retaining original removable oak shelves and original hardware including the beautifully cast solid brass escutcheons and heavy teardrop brass drawer handles on flower back plates.

The upper case with a wainscot oak carcase dressed in book matched burr walnut veneers to door frames and to the wide stepped and splayed ogee shaped cornice and side panels. The pair of solid walnut panel doors and fielded and framed in burr walnut and enhanced with moulded walnut borders. Both doors open and close smoothly with no warps and with original escutcheon central lock and an early, possibly original, working key. The left hand door retains its pierced brass inner slide bolts

The equally substantial lower case with matching burr walnut veneers to drawer fronts, plinth and side panels – all of fantastic colour - and with lovely carved walnut thumb and ogee moulded borders at the waist and plinth.

The whole set on very large and early bun feet and with six graduated oak lined original drawers with rebated runners and steel locks. The drawer fronts dressed in figured walnut and with fine featherbanded borders. All of the drawers open and close smoothly and have clean and solid oak interiors offering a huge amount of storage space.

The fully framed wainscot oak back would have been a very expensive detail. Such attention to a side of the cabinet which would rarely be seen is an indicator of a London cabinet maker or certainly of a top quality city maker of the period.

In exceptionally good, usable and solid condition.

The press is not terrifically tall and is easy to use. A hanging rail could be fitted to the interior if required and all five shelves can fit in one side as shown in our photos.

The thickly cut veneers are stable throughout, very well matched and with lovely figuring and burls. The press has had some professional restoration over the last 330 years, probably during the 19th or early 20th century. The rebated drawer runners have been lined, virtually invisibly, with fine oak fillets to return them to their original width.

All of the drawer locks are steel and riveted and appear original other than one which is a Victorian brass replacement. No worm, significant repairs or replaced elements, minor repairs and restorations, dings and marks consistent with age and very caring use.

72.5 inches high. 19.5 inches deep and 63.25 inches wide (max at feet and at cornice). The lower case from floor is 31 inches. The inner, usable, height of the drawers are: top pair 6 inches, middle pair 6.5 inches and lower pair 8 inches.
