A beautifully engraved backplate to the mechanism signed ''Barwise St Martins Lane, London'' within a floral cartouche. A glass back door showing the mechanism. An original crank key. Circa 1815.
The maker John Barwise was born in Cockermouth, Cumbria around 1756. In 1790 he moved to 29, St. Martins Lane in London. Barwise’s workshop became one of the most prestigious and he was clockmaker to King George III. Some examples of his work can be seen in The Guildhall Museum and The Science Museu...m. He was also a chronometer maker. Interestingly, in 1805 he was one of the clockmakers elected by the Board of Longitude to adjudicate on the dispute between John Arnold and Thomas Earnshaw.
There is an oval plaque on the rear door inner ‘PERCY WEBSTER, CLOCKMAKER 37, GREAT PORTLAND STREET’. Born in 1862, Percy Webster was regarded as one of the first authorities on antique clocks. Webster was a Master of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers.
