An 18th Century French Painted Armoire of Grand and Imposing Scale.
This armoire or cupboard is highly carved, and has old paint decoration.
The subject of the carving revolves around birds and flowers. Beginning at the top, there are floral swags with a central bird seated upon them. This carving is in very high relief and is picked out in tones of grey and off white. Behind this is a frieze of floral detailing, all painted. The pilasters and dividers between the doors are carved in fine detail with small scale carving used to great effect. The small panels in the doors contain scenes with four or five different carved mouldings surrounding them, truly wonderful examples of the carvers' art. The hinges are beautifully made and of exceptional visual interest as well with a variety of decorative turnings on the outer portions. Inside the cupboard has a series of adjustable shelves and two shallow drawers. The base of is decorated with fruiting vines and leaves and stands upon carved, shaped feet.
Of grand scale with incredible carved detail.
