A Magnificent Chamberlain Worcester Porcelain Vase and Cover, Circa 1815-20

Description

A magnificent Chamberlain Worcester vase and cover, circa 1815-20. Of ovoid form, the fluted shoulder applied with impressive gilt wyvern handles, richly decorated with gilt-edged panels of exotic ‘fancy’ birds in the manner of George Davis, on grassy banks, a profusion of smaller panels with more colourful birds and insects, reserved on a deep blue mazarine ground, 53cm high, red script mark ‘Chamberlains Worcester’ to cover.

This shape was selected for the important vase and cover painted by Humphrey Chamberlain Junior with a portrait of Princess Charlotte, formerly in the Twinight Collection and sold by Bonhams on 29 September 2021, lot 47. Geoffrey Godden illustrates a similar vase and cover painted with birds and insects, see Chamberlain-Worcester Porcelain (1982), p.304, fig.304.

Condition: The vase and cover both in good condition with no damage. There is a tiny fleabite nick to the tip of one of the pings of one wyvern handle, of little significance. The enamel decoration remains very well overall. However, there is a little wear to the gilding in places, mainly confined to the high points of the top of the finial, the rims, handles, shoulder, acanthus moulded stem and foot, and to the sharp edges and corners of the plinth base. There is also a little minor wear to the formal border on top of the plinth base around the foot. There are a few small points of regilding in places, including to a 5.5cm section of the rim edge, a couple of further small points on the rim and a few of the dots, a small point to the back of the neck of one wyvern handle, and to the curled terminals of the acanthus leaves on the stem. None of this wear detracts from the overall impressive appearance of the piece
