Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This 16th century Tudor coffer belongs to the sixteenth century and is made from dark brown oak with iron hardware. The chest has a rectangular form with a hinged top lid, slab ends, and shaped feet supporting the base. Vertical fluted carvings run across the front panel, centred by an iron keyhole escutcheon. Surface wear appears on the timber and edges, showing the age of the piece. Measuring 49 cm high, 104 cm wide, and 33 cm deep, this storage chest sits neatly along a hallway wall or serves as an accent piece in a living room. The interior holds twin candle boxes within its six-plank construction.

FAQs

Coffers were primary storage vessels during the Tudor period, constructed to hold household linens, clothing, and valuables before built-in cabinetry became widespread.

These pieces were crafted from solid English oak, joined using wooden pegs or iron nails, and featured hand-carved decorative motifs directly on the timber.

Authentic period coffers display hand-hewn timber marks, historical iron lock plates, authentic wear patterns, and traditional pegged joinery without modern machine screws.

A carved oak coffer can be positioned at the foot of a bed or placed in an entryway to function as low-profile storage alongside contemporary lighting and art.

Maintain the finish by applying clear natural beeswax periodically, keeping the timber away from direct heat sources, and maintaining stable ambient humidity levels.
