Antique Oak Chest - Late 17th Century with Carved Decoration

Description

A 17th-century Charles II oak chest or coffer having a hinged three-panel top with a moulded edge, below which the front and sides have wonderful carved decoration. Finished on stile legs.

In very good original condition. The only areas of note are that the original lock has long since been lost to time, the hinges have been replaced at some point (probably early 20th C.) and the rear right leg shows signs of previous worm.

A lovely example of an 17th-century staple.

In the 17th century, coffers were essential storage furniture items in British households, used primarily for keeping valuable linens, clothes, and documents safe under lock and key. Crafted with framed joinery, they represented significant wealth and artisan craftsmanship of the Jacobean and Carolean periods.
