Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

This tall, narrow Victorian chimney cupboard dates from 1890 and is executed in the Renaissance Revival style using warm brown pine and glass. The exterior displays dense ornamentation including a carved green man mask upon a scrolled crest, fruit garland carvings along the frieze, flanking carved pilasters, two glazed arched upper doors with internal shelving, and a scrollwork carved lower door panel. Visible signs of age include aged surface patination and minor wear across the timber. Measuring 234 cm high by 74 cm wide and 32 cm deep with an internal depth of 16 cm, the piece functions well in a modern home as a narrow storage cabinet in a bathroom or compact hallway.

FAQs

A chimney cupboard is a tall, narrow cabinet designed to fit within the narrow spaces or alcoves on either side of a fireplace chimney breast. Popular throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, these units provided efficient vertical storage in rooms with limited wall area.

19th-century carved cupboards were typically constructed from solid softwoods such as pine, or hardwoods like oak and walnut. Features included hand-carved relief decorative work, joinery such as mortise and tenon joints, and float glass panes for glazed doors.

Authentic Renaissance Revival pine furniture features deep relief hand-carving, classical architectural elements such as pediment tops and pilasters, hand-cut dovetail joints, and irregular glass panes. Look for age-appropriate oxidation on the unfinished wood surfaces and original cast metal iron or brass hardware.

A chimney cupboard can be placed in dining rooms, living room alcoves, or hallways to maximize vertical space. Modern interiors balance its detailed woodwork by pairing it with neutral wall palettes, contemporary artwork, or minimalist ceramics displayed on its internal shelves.

Preserve carved pine by keeping it away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and cracking. Clean dust from carved crevices using a soft dry brush, and apply a neutral beeswax polish periodically to maintain the wood surface.
