Georgian Jacobite Engraved Multi Spiral Air Twist Wine Glass

18th century
Description

This is a Georgian, English, multi spiral air twist wine glass of Jacobite significance dating from the middle of the 18th century, c1750.

The glass is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear to the rim of the foot commensurate with some 250 years of use. It has a rough pontil mark on the underside of the foot.

The glass has a trumpet-shaped bowl measuring 6 cm (2.4 inches) in diameter at the rim. The bowl is engraved with a six petal rose (for the House of Stuart), open and closed rose buds (for James and Bonny Prince Charlie), an oak leaf (for the Boscobel oak) and the word "Fiat" in script. The bowl sits on a multi spiral air twist stem and a conical foot which measures 6.8 cm (2.7 inches) in diameter. The glass is 15.6 cm (6.2 inches) in height. There are two minute (1 mm wide) flea bites out of the underside edge of the foot rim, no more than age related wear and tear but mentioned for comprehensiveness. There are no other chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There is a long (13 mm) thin unburst bubble in the metal of the bowl and a couple of tiny extraneous deposits of glass on the inside of the bowl near the base, all dating from manufacture. There is a collector's sticker to the underside of the foot.

English lead glass weighing in at 160 g. (~ 5 1/2 oz.).

Provenenance: The Paul Kettle Collection; The Cannon Collection

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Jacobite wine glasses were created in 18th-century Britain by supporters of the exiled House of Stuart. They feature symbolic engravings, such as the white rose of the Jacobites or cryptic Latin mottos, used to toast the exiled monarch in secret.

Air twist stems were crafted by trapping air pockets inside molten lead crystal, which were then drawn out and twisted as the stem was formed to create intricate spiral patterns running down the glass.

Authentic Georgian air twist glassware typically features a greyish or dark tint to the lead glass, pontil marks or smoothed foot bases, minor internal air bubbles, and hand-engraved details showing slight irregularities consistent with period craftsmanship.

Single pieces of historic stemware work as refined accent objects displayed inside glazed display cabinets, lighted shelving units, or on sideboard trays to catch and refract ambient light.

Hand wash antique lead glass individually in lukewarm water using mild detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding dishwasher use, extreme water temperature changes, and abrasive chemicals that could damage fine engravings.
