This nineteenth century French opaline glass vase originates from Baccarat, displaying classic period elegance. The piece consists of a smooth white body with a bulbous base, narrowing into a slender neck that opens upward. At the top, the rim is styled with a distinct ruffled form and finished with an applied pale blue glass border that traces the undulating edge. The smooth milk-white surface contrasts cleanly against the delicate blue trim of the flared collar. Standing at 26 cm high, the proportion suits placement upon a sideboard top within a traditional dining room or living space. Positioned in a domestic interior, the vessel functions effectively as a decorative accent holding small botanical arrangements or standing alone on display furniture. The smooth translucent finish catches ambient light across the rounded body and fluted rim. Such nineteenth century French glassware brings a refined antique element to classic mantlepieces, console tables, or display cabinets. The balanced silhouette and delicate colour combination complement period interiors while maintaining a functional role for interior styling.

Opaline glass is a decorative style of semi-translucent or opaque blown glass developed in France during the early 19th century. Inspired by Chinese porcelain and Venetian glass, it reached peak popularity between 1800 and 1870, with major French glassworks producing items in milky whites and pastel tones.

Opaline glass was hand-blown using sodic glass combined with bone ash, tin dioxide, or cryolite to achieve its characteristic opaque, milky appearance. Contrast trims, such as coloured glass rims, were applied by hand while the main vessel was still malleable.

Authentic 19th-century pieces generally show signs of hand-blowing, such as a ground and polished pontil mark on the base. Early Baccarat opaline pieces rarely had acid-etched marks, which were introduced later, but display superior glass weight, smooth finish, and precise applied details.

Display the vase on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or window sill where natural light can highlight the translucency of the glass. It functions well as a standalone decorative object or paired with contemporary ceramics to create a curated contrast of textures.

Wash gently by hand using lukewarm water and a mild detergent, avoiding abrasive sponges or harsh chemicals. Ensure the piece is dried immediately with a soft lint-free cloth, and never place antique glassware in a dishwasher or submerge it in extreme water temperatures.
