18th Century French Mountain Cupboard

18th century
Description

This is a truly rare piece of French vernacular furniture. This cupboard is 18th century and made of chestnut , which suggests this piece probably originates from the Dordogne region in France. This example has two doors opening to a shelved interior, the doors have a bold geometric design which gives the cupboard a contemporary look and is why I love these mountain cupboards. An unusual contrast you rarely see. All over great proportions, stunning patina and just a honest feel about.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating from alpine and rural regions of France, these rustic cupboards were crafted as robust, functional storage units. Typically featuring thick timber panels and minimalist, sturdy construction, they reflect the utility and regional woodworking traditions of 18th-century provincial furniture.

Craftsmen typically utilised local hardwoods and softwoods such as oak, chestnut, walnut, and pine. Construction techniques relied on hand-pegged mortise and tenon joints, hand-carved panels, and forged iron hardware such as hinges and latches.

Authentic pieces display signs of hand-planed surfaces, uneven panel dimensions, and wooden peg joinery protruding slightly due to wood shrinkage over centuries. Additionally, hand-forged iron fittings, authentic wood oxidisation, and historic wear around handles indicate period origins.

A dark timber rustic cupboard provides visual depth and contrast when set against clean, neutral modern plaster walls. It functions effectively as a linen press in a bedroom, a larder in a contemporary kitchen, or storage within a hallway.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year to preserve the patina. Keep the cabinet away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity fluctuations to prevent wood movement and cracking.
