A matched pair of circular George III Old Sheffield plate wine coasters forms this antique set, created circa 1790 in England. Each piece combines silver plate and turned dark wood, presenting a bright silver exterior paired with a rich dark wooden base. The sides showcase an openwork pierced lattice gallery punctuated by vertical slat detailing, circular motif accents, and an engraved family crest on a central cartouche. Beaded borders frame both the upper and lower edges of the metal framework. Turning rings are visible in the wooden interior floor. These coasters measure 3.8 cm high, 12.7 cm wide, and 12.7 cm deep. They function practically on a dining table, serving trolley, or sideboard top to hold wine bottles and protect surfaces from condensation rings during meals or evening gatherings in a domestic setting.

Old Sheffield Plate refers to a technique invented in 1742 where a layer of sterling silver was fused onto a copper ingot before being rolled into sheets. This method allowed silversmiths to produce silver tableware and accessories at a lower cost than solid sterling silver until electroplating replaced it in the 1840s.

Eighteenth-century wine coasters were constructed with a silver or silver-plated gallery frame surrounding a turned wooden inset base. The base, often made of mahogany or fruitwood, provided stability and prevented bottle condensation from marking polished wooden dining surfaces.

Authentic Old Sheffield Plate pieces frequently display copper showing through slightly at raised edges or points of friction, known as bleeding. They also lack modern electroplate stamps, featuring drawn wire borders and visible seam joins on the interior of the galleries.

Antique silver wine coasters can be placed on a sideboard or dining table as functional decanter stands or repurposed as decorative trinket dishes on a console table. Their metallic finish and wooden centres complement both traditional dark wood furniture and contemporary minimalist settings.

Clean Old Sheffield Plate using a mild soapy water solution and a soft cloth, taking care not to submerge the wooden base in water. Use specialised silver polish sparingly to avoid wearing away the fused silver layer, and dry the metal thoroughly after cleaning.
