French Automata Lighthouse Clock

19th century
Description

A wonderful 19th-century novelty clock by Andre Romain Guilmet of Paris, who was famous for producing various industrial-themed mantel clocks.

8-day timepiece movement that is wound through the opening bezel, which also facilitates hand adjustment. Silvered dial with painted Roman numerals, and original matching blued steel hands. At the base of the lighthouse, there is a second movement that drives the rotating top of the lighthouse for a few hours, revealing an aneroid barometer with a similar silvered dial that opposes the clock. To the sides of the drum are two thermometers, one reading Fahrenheit and the other Centigrade, both with silvered register plates.

The case is of all-brass construction sitting on a black slate base. These clocks appear on the market with different surface finishes, some gilded, silver-plated, silvered, and some of natural brass. This example shows no evidence of ever being gilded or silver plated, and so the case has been lightly polished and then lacquered to protect from fingerprints. The drum has been silvered, which is in keeping with traces of the original silvering.

Serviced and guaranteed for 3 years.

Height: 17? or 43.5 cm

CIRCA. 1885

Provenance: Private collection, UK

This Victorian French Industrial novelty mantel clock takes the shape of a lighthouse, standing on a round black slate base. The brass tower features engraved brickwork lines, small rectangular windows with pale pink details, a pierced gallery railing under the upper section, and a spherical finial at the top. The upper drum has a silvered metal dial with painted black Roman numerals, accompanied by original blued steel hands. Measuring 43.5 cm high, this piece serves as a functional timepiece and barometer suitable for display on a mantelpiece or desk in a gentleman's library or study. The construction incorporates natural polished brass and silvered metal components throughout the cylindrical body and multi-tiered foundation.

Originating in late nineteenth-century France, industrial novelty clocks were created to celebrate engineering advancements, frequently featuring mechanical automata in the shape of lighthouses, steam engines, and nautical instruments.

These timepieces were typically constructed using gilt brass, silvered metal, slate, marble, and intricate steel clock movements incorporating revolving upper sections or automaton mechanisms.

Authentic period examples often feature maker stamps such as Andre Romain Guilmet on the movement, heavy cast metal casings with detailed brickwork patterns, fine silvering, and eight-day mechanical movements.

Position the clock as a focal decorative piece on a library desk, a fireplace mantelpiece, or a dark wood console table to complement eclectic and traditional interiors.

Keep the casing dust-free using a soft microfibre cloth without harsh chemical polishes, and ensure the mechanical movement is serviced every five to seven years by a qualified horologist.
