This Victorian sterling silver mustard pot from 1853 presents a pear-shaped body with a hinged lid, a shell-shaped thumbpiece, and a curved, ribbed cast scroll handle. The outer surface features heavy embossing of floral and scroll motifs alongside a vacant cartouche on the lid, while the interior is gilded. A small notch sits on the rim of the lid next to the hinge, and the piece rests on a round base. Practical dimensions measure 2.5 cm high, 2.5 cm wide, and 2.5 cm deep. In a modern interior, this condiment container suits a sideboard top or dining table setting, bringing traditional English country house character to tableware displays. The sterling silver construction provides a reflective silver finish that complements formal dining arrangements or traditional kitchen collections. The piece functions as a decorative and useful vessel for serving condiments during meals or as a display item among antique silverware.

A Victorian silver mustard pot is a small vessel designed to store and serve prepared mustard at the dining table. Produced during the nineteenth century, these pieces featured hinged lids, handles, and often included fitted glass liners to protect the metal from the acidic condiment.

These items were predominantly crafted from sterling silver or silver plate. Craftsmen employed techniques such as hand-chasing, engraving, casting, and repousse work to form decorative scrollwork, floral motifs, and structured thumbpieces on the hinged lids.

Authenticity is verified by British hallmark stamps indicating the purity mark (lion passant for sterling silver), duty mark, town mark, makers mark, and a date letter corresponding to the Victorian era (18371901).

Small silver hollowware can be displayed on dining sideboards, tray tables, or within glazed display cabinets. They serve as historical accents alongside contemporary tableware or as part of a curated collection of antique silver.

Clean gently using a soft cloth and specialist silver polish to remove tarnish, avoiding abrasive pads. Ensure all residues are washed away with warm soapy water and dried thoroughly to prevent oxidisation.
