Antique Dutch Marquetry Walnut Linen Press/cupboard

18th century
Description

A fine and richly decorated antique Dutch walnut linen press, constructed in the late 18th century and extensively inlaid with floral marquetry throughout. The cabinet features a shaped and serpentine cornice above a pair of panelled doors, each inlaid with an oval reserve of flowering foliage tied with ribbon motifs, framed by delicate trailing floral borders.

The lower section comprises three long drawers, also finely inlaid with scrolling foliage and floral sprays, retaining their original pierced brass handles and escutcheons. The cabinet opens to reveal a fitted interior with shelves and a series of shallow drawers, intended for the storage of linens and textiles, and retaining its original layout.

The sides are equally well decorated, with marquetry urns issuing flowering stems and further trailing floral motifs, demonstrating a high level of craftsmanship and attention to detail throughout. The cabinet stands on shaped bracket feet and is constructed in solid walnut with lighter fruitwood inlays, typical of Dutch marquetry of this period.

This is a substantial and elegant piece, decorative yet highly practical and well suited to use as a statement storage cabinet within both traditional and contemporary interiors.

Condition

In good antique condition, with general surface wear, minor fading and small losses to the marquetry in places, commensurate with age and use. The interior shows expected wear from storage. The structure is sound, with doors and drawers functioning well. No major restorations observed.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Dutch marquetry linen press is a substantial two-part cabinet originating in the Netherlands, designed primarily for storing household linens. It typically features an arched upper cupboard decorated with intricate floral marquetry inlays positioned above a chest of drawers base.

These cabinets were predominantly crafted from dense European walnut or oak, with veneer panels inlaid using contrasting fruitwoods, holly, boxwood, and bone. Hand-cut dovetail joints, thick oak drawer linings, and hand-chased brass hardware are characteristic of early construction methods.

Authentic pieces display distinct motifs such as urns, scrolling foliage, ribbons, and birds crafted via marquetry techniques. Look for hand-sawn veneers of varying thickness, natural shrinkage gaps, historical iron locks, and aged, oxidized timber on unexposed areas like the back boards.

An antique linen press serves as a commanding focal point in a master bedroom, living area, or large hallway. Balance its rich visual detail and dark tones against neutral walls, contemporary lighting, and modern soft furnishings to prevent the room from feeling overly traditional.

Keep the cabinet in a climate-controlled room away from direct sunlight, radiators, and high humidity fluctuation to prevent veneer lifting. Nourish the wood periodically with a high-quality beeswax polish, buffing gently along the grain, and avoid abrasive chemical cleaners.
