Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Coloured glassware gained significant popularity in mid-nineteenth-century Britain. Green wine glasses, often influenced by German Roemer traditions, were originally designed to mask the cloudiness or sediment inherent in historic white wines while adding decorative interest to formal dinner tables.

Victorian green glassware was hand-blown using lead glass mixed with metallic oxides, specifically copper or iron oxide, to achieve rich green hues. The stems and feet were formed separately by skilled artisans and fused while hot.

Authentic pieces from around 1850 typically show subtle hand-blown variations, slight asymmetry, and a polished or snapped pontil mark on the base. The presence of hand-tooled knopped stems and wear on the foot rim also indicates age.

These historical pieces can be displayed on a dining sideboard, integrated into a formal table setting, or arranged inside a glazed cabinet where light passes through the green glass to showcase the colour.

Wash hand-blown antique glassware by hand in lukewarm water using mild detergent. Avoid dishwashers and extreme temperature changes, which can cause thermal shock and crack historical glass.
