Edwardian Strawberry Diamond Cut Glass Preserve Pot and Cover

1900 - 1920
Description

This is an early 20th century, cut glass preserve pot and cover dating from the beginning of the 20th century, c1920.

The pot is in excellent condition for its age. It shows age related wear and tear consistent with some 100 years of use.

The pot is approximately cup-shaped and measures 9 cm (3.6 inches) in diameter at its widest point. The bowl is cut with large strawberry diamonds. The base is radially cut to the underside The pot is 7 cm (2.8 inches) in height without the cover and 12.5 cm (5 inches) in height with the cover on.

The cover is cut with strawberry diamonds in the same manner as the bowl and has a facet cut ball finial. We believe it to be the original. It is of the same colour and metal as the bowl and is a good fit. The cover has a small aperture where a (silver) spoon would sit.

There is some minor fritting to the rim of the cover where it touches the bowl. There are no significant chips, cracks, significant scratches or any other evidence of restoration. A pretty piece of cut glass in excellent condition.

Lead glass weighing in at 545 g. (~ 1 lb. 3 oz.).

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A preserve pot is a specialized table container designed during the early twentieth century to serve jams, marmalades, and honey during breakfast or afternoon tea services.

These pots were typically made from heavy lead crystal glass, hand-cut using stone wheels to create geometric patterns such as strawberry diamond and cross-cut designs.

Authentic pieces exhibit precise hand-cut edges, heavy weight due to high lead content, clear light refraction, and often feature a designated notch in the rim to accommodate a serving spoon.

Place the pot on a sideboard, dining table, or open kitchen shelving as a functional vessel for condiments, or display it on a dressing table to store small accessories.

Hand wash the glass in warm water using a mild liquid detergent and a soft cloth, avoiding automatic dishwashers and sudden temperature changes that could cause thermal shock.
