Delft pottery originated in the Netherlands during the 17th century, initially inspired by imported Chinese porcelain. Potters in Delft developed tin-glazed earthenware that evolved from traditional blue-and-white motifs to include vibrant polychrome palettes influenced by Japanese Imari designs.

Delftware is constructed from local clay bodies covered with an opaque white tin-glaze tin-opacified lead glaze. Artisans then hand-painted pigment designs directly onto the unfired or biscuit-fired glaze before a final protective kiln firing.

Authentic antique Delft features irregularities in the tin-glaze, visible crazing, and hand-painted brushwork with subtle variations in tone. Many older pieces bear painter marks or factory ciphers on the underside, though unmarked examples are also common.

These decorative vessels can be displayed symmetrically on a mantelpiece, sideboard, or bookcase to add historical contrast and colour to contemporary spaces. Pairing them with neutral backdrops allows the intricate hand-painted patterns to stand out as focal points.

Antique earthenware requires gentle dusting with a soft, dry cloth and should never be immersed in water or exposed to harsh cleaning chemicals. Keep pieces away from direct sunlight and extreme humidity fluctuations to protect the fragile tin glaze from further crazing.
