FAQs

A court cupboard is a traditional type of storage furniture originating in the late medieval period and evolving through the 17th and 18th centuries in Britain, primarily used for displaying plate and storing textiles.

These pieces are predominantly crafted from solid English oak, utilising traditional frame-and-panel construction, pegged joints, and hand-carved details without the use of modern metal fasteners.

Authenticity is identified through hand-cut joints, irregular hand-planed board surfaces, period-appropriate iron or brass hardware, and the presence of natural oxidisation and patination accumulated over centuries.

Such a substantial heritage piece can be incorporated into contemporary spaces as a striking focal point in a dining room or living area, contrasting clean modern lines with rich historical texture.

Preservation involves maintaining stable indoor humidity and temperature levels, avoiding direct sunlight to protect the finish, and occasionally applying natural beeswax to nourish the dry timber.
