Georgian Set of Four Ruby Glass Double Lip Rinsers

19th century
Description

This is a scarce set of four late Georgian, hand-blown, ruby glass double lip rinsers dating from the beginning of the 19th century, c1820. Rinsers were used to rest the small wine glasses used at the time in water so that they were clean for the next wine to be served. The two lips are thought to allow a rinser to be shared between two people or to allow two different wine glasses to be rinsed at the same time.

The rinsers are in excellent condition for their age. This means, of course, that they show age related wear and tear to both the rims of the bowls and to the rims of the bases consistent with some 200 years of use.

The rinsers have bucket-shaped bowl measuring 10.5 cm (4.2 inches) in diameter at the rims. The bowls are plain save for polished out pontil marks to the bases. The rinsers are 9.5 cm (3.8 inches) in height. There are a couple of inclusions in the metal of the bowls dating from manufacture which manifest themselves as bumps in the glass. There are no chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration.

They are made from English lead metal and weigh 335 g. (~ 12 oz.) each.
