Description

A fantastic antique mahogany cabinet / chest on legs. This was made in England, it dates from around the 1900-1910 period.

It has a stylish and elegant design, the quality is outstanding. This looks like a regular chest on chest, but three of the upper drawers are actually dummy drawers that open as a door to reveal a cabinet space. There is a pull out slide below the cabinet, so this would be great as a drinks cabinet, or as a bedroom storage piece. The cornice has lovely teardrop moulding, this stands on cabriole legs with shell carving at the knees. The top half lifts off the bottom half for ease of transport.

We have had this re-polished to a high standard, the condition is excellent for its age.

Width – 26 inches , 66 cm

Depth – 20 inches , 51 cm

Strictly Vetted Dealers

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.

Secure Transit

Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.

The Sustainable Choice

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

FAQs

A tallboy, or chest on chest, is a tall piece of furniture featuring multiple stacked drawers that emerged in the late 17th century, gaining immense popularity during the Georgian period for maximizing vertical storage space in bedrooms.

Traditional pieces were typically constructed from dense hardwoods like mahogany or oak, featuring hand-cut dovetail joints on the drawer construction, solid timber panels, and mortise and tenon frames.

Authenticity is determined by examining hand-cut dovetailing, timber shrinkage patterns, period-correct brass hardware, hand-planed drawer bottoms, and natural oxidisation within the secondary woods.

This piece can serve as a functional focal point in a bedroom or hallway, pairing effectively with neutral wall colours and minimalist decor to highlight the rich grain and traditional craftsmanship.

Maintain antique mahogany by keeping it away from direct sunlight and heat sources to prevent wood splitting, and nourish the timber periodically using traditional beeswax rather than modern silicone polishes.
